Serpentine Sackler Gallery, London
Looking like a mutant jellyfish attempting to mate with a Palladian villa, the Serpentine's new space will finally open this autumn. It's the first permanent public building in London by Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid, who designed the inaugural temporary Serpentine pavilion in 2000 as a more angular version of this undulating white canopy. Both structures recall a summer marquee battling with a stiff breeze – an aesthetic strangely apt for the Kensington Gardens setting, just across the bridge from the existing Serpentine gallery. The project transforms the grade II-listed Magazine building, a former gunpowder store built in 1805, into a new gallery, bringing it into public use for the first time; a restaurant and social space will be housed beneath the extension's rippling, tensile roof. The building will open with a show of large-scale sculptures by the young Argentinian artist Adrián Villar Rojas. From 28 September serpentinegallery.org
